What can we get help with in couples therapy?

Couples therapy can help with a range of relationship issues, but among the most common include:

-
Conflict (point-scoring)
-
Emotional distancing
-
Intimacy (desire discrepancy)
-
Parenting disputes
-
Postnatal (adjusting to life with children)
-
Infidelity (rebuilding trust)
When should we see a couples therapist?

It's never too early or too late to see a couples therapist. Regardless of the issues you face, or for how long you have been dealing with them, couples therapy gives you the opportunity to understand these problems in a way that you may not have considered before. With improved insight and valuable tools, you can work through longstanding issues and create a refreshingly new dynamic with your partner.

How will therapy help us?

Relationships tend to fail when we feel that our emotional needs are not being met. You may experience this as not feeling cared for, supported, wanted or accepted, among other needs. A large part of therapy is identifying what each other's needs are and learning how to communicate these needs in a clear, encouraging and vulnerable way with one another. Through guidance and practice, you can learn to meet each other's needs without sacrificing your own.

How long does couples therapy take?

Improving relationships is usually about changing old habits and learning new ways to connect and communicate. As the saying goes, old habits can die hard, and so it usually takes a number of sessions to make useful progress. Ultimately, therapy is as long as a piece of string, but will likely take several months, rather than several weeks.
